JOURNALISM/MARKETING
Hundreds of articles for
newspapers, magazines, local companies and non-profit organizations. Examples:
The National School Boards Association, Ohio Education Association, The New
Standard, a dental group in New Albany, Eden Lane.
Full-time
journalist for daily newspapers in Ohio for nearly two decades, including nine
years at The Columbus Dispatch, Ohios second-largest newspaper.
GRANT WRITING
Research, contacts, information gathering and
text for grants for various organizations. Examples: Audubon Ohio, Share the
Vision, the Canton Art Institute. I can assist organizations with methods of
grant research and formats for preparing proposals. I also can assist with
writing the case for support and mission statement.
MEDIA TRAINING
Media training for nonprofits, including FIRSTLINK, Ohio School Boards
Association, Ohio Association of Nonprofit Organizations and the Columbus Arts
Marketing Association. Focus is on how the media do their jobs and how to
interview and garner publicity.
PUBLIC RELATIONS
Coordinator
of development and PR at the Canton Art Institute in the early 1990s. Duties
included promoting exhibitions and educational programs and assisting the
director in fund-raising activities. Included conveying important messages
about the museum through its annual report and its numerous applications for
funding.
Wrote materials and coordinated publicity for community
events. Example: The Make a Difference Day Picnic for the homeless run by
FIRSTLINK (see firstlink.org for information about the agency).
OTHER PROFESSIONAL WORK
Founding editor of The New
Standard, an award-winning semi-monthly Jewish community paper now in its
third year. I continue to write and edit as an independent contractor. Duties
include planning coverage and managing writers.
Managing editor of
Diary of a Congregation, commemorating Congregation Tifereth Israel's
100th anniversary. Managed a team of a dozen writers, contributed copy, hired
and worked with printer and designer. Book was published in 2003.
Reports affecting local public policy: Research for and writing of
lengthy reports for Kidsohio.org, a statewide think-tank devoted to issues
affecting the lives of children. Topics: The growth of charter schools in Ohio
and recommendations for methods to help children with behaviorial difficulties.

Adjunct English faculty member, Columbus State
Community College, 2003. Focus on the varieties of English composition.
Adjunct journalism faculty, Ohio State University. Focus on the craft
of writing, editing and interviewing.

School Public Relations Association; a bronze award from the Society of
National Association Publications (SNAP) and finalist placement in the
Association of Educational Publishers (EdPress) contest.
Award for best
magazine piece, from the National School Public Relations Association, for
article on superintendents in crisis The School Administrator, 2001.
First place, Society of Professional Journalists, Ohio Chapter, for
1997 coverage of the Ohio Supreme Court's first decision declaring our system
of school funding unconstitutional.
